Lateral Canthotomy and Cantholysis (LCC) Training System

The LCC training system is a realistic, simulation-based medical manikin that is used to practice the LCC procedure. It was developed under the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program.

The LCC training system allows students to rehearse the LCC procedure until they are comfortable with, and proficiently able to perform, the procedure. The LCC training system has single-use replaceable eye inserts that simulate the pressure of a proptotic eye, relevant anatomical landmarks of the eye and orbit, tendon strumming, and tendon cutting. Once the procedure is done correctly, the pressure behind the eye is relieved.

A formal Training Effectiveness Evaluation (TEE) was performed. Results showed that students trained using the LCC training system were more confident and more often performed the LCC procedure correctly over students that did not train using the LCC training system.

Sonalysts has extended the capabilities of the LCC training system to support training additional ocular traumas encountered at point of injury and during prolonged field care including ruptured globe, hemorrhagic chemosis, preseptal cellulitis, orbital cellulitis, chemical burn, and eyelid lacerations. The LCC training system eye inserts are also being integrated with other medical manikins such as the Advanced Modular Manikin (AMM) platform.
